A Single Book

Last week I attended
a women’s conference at Harvest.

There was so much to encourage
but the smallest comment
has continually provided encouragement
as I’ve thought of it since.

It was regarding the book of Ruth
in the Old Testament of the Bible.
Ruth is the story of a widow.
But what stood out to me is
that there are no visions,
no angels,
no words from the Lord
in the book of Ruth.

Instead it’s just an ordinary story.

That is so helpful to me.
Because since Mark died I’ve felt
like I should be hearing from God.
Feeling Him more than ever.
That I should know the direction He’s giving me.
To be able to say He told me this or that.

But for me, hearing this was a reminder
to hear from God I can simply read my Bible.

I’m mesmerized
with the realization that
there is a single book
that can speak to every aspect of my life.

I’m so glad you’re getting some comfort from your Bible. I was planning to spend tonight reading some Job and seeing where it applies to my life right now. I’ll pray for God to speak to you through His Word. :)

Well, for what it’s worth, I can’t ever say that I’ve heard God talking to me.
Thankful that I can be here praying for you.
When darkness veils His lovely face,
    I rest on His unchanging grace;
In every high and stormy gale
My anchor holds within the veil.

Have you read Becky White’s book, “Recapture”? Do you remember her from The Grove? Single mom of 4 boys (a set of triplets, one with severe autism)? I have an extra copy if you’d like to borrow. It’s an intertwining (sp?!) of her life with the story of Ruth. I think I’ve underlined half the book! She did an amazing job and has such fantastic insight. I actually bought the extra copy with you in mind but then kinda chickened out, thinking you probably already had been given a copy since you have so many Grove “hookups”. =0) Let me know if you’d like it. I can drop it off on your porch when I’m out your way.

And my feelings aren’t hurt if you don’t. Trust me. =0)

Hey Angie, I am so glad you got to go to the conference. I heard it was really good. I wanted to go but wasn’t able at the last minute. I think sometimes when tragedy hits our lives we think that God will speak to us in a morfe complex and abundantly clear way… but like you said we can hear from him a little every day through his word….Gives even more meaning to, “it’s the little things that count.” A word, a verse, a paragraph, his words you read throughout your life is God speaking to you shaping you, building you to that purpose and meaning for the “why” to become less painful every day. Thank you for continuing to share. Hope you are able to sleep tonight.
